Sunday Cervix is growing, and part of that includes bringing you new things. Every Friday I hope to bring you recommendations for your weekend. This weekend, it's books. Grab your treat of choice (cake for me), a cup of tea, and let's curl up and forget about everything for a little while.
Thanks for the book recommendations, I haven’t read any of them so onto my reading list. I sometimes read books by male authors but mostly books by women.
I’m currently reading Three Guineas by Virginia Woolf and it is excellent, so well written and still (unsurprisingly) very relevant.
When I got to A Little Life on your list I thought "but this is written by a man.. " How's that for unconscious bias? I actually wasn't so fond of that one - unrelentingly grim. I'd place These Impossible Things ahead of it! Will share this list with my millenial daughter!
Yes I’ve spoken to people who find it too grim. I do appreciate that the sadist in me really loves the grimness and that is problematic, and I need to address it with my therapist. 😂
And thank you, for those kind words about my book. I’m flattered, truly. X
I also mostly only read books written by women! It was never a concerted effort on my part, I just gravitated towards them naturally. Men get enough airtime! I also mostly listen to music w female voices and watch tv shows/movies w female protagonists. Not strictly, but mostly! I hear enough of men talking all day long. This is why I couldn’t get through Ted Lasso, a bunch of men, going on about sports??? 🥱
I loved Circe, I read most of it sitting on the beach (my favorite place to read, ever). My favorite recent read was How To Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair, a beautifully written book, she deserves all the accolades she’s received and then some.
Animal is a fantastic read, but I have an even more special place in my heart for Three Women. I’ve not read A Little Life, for some reason (unknown to me) I started with To Paradise, and I’ve put it down and picked up several other books over the last few months trying to read it. Without question, however, These Impossible Things occupies a place in my heart that the other books on your list simply do not. So, thank you.
I just finished reading Green Dot by Madeline Gray and loved it.
Oh, and when I had my first baby, almost 6 years ago to the day, I promised myself I would not read anything written by a man ever again. And I haven’t. And I never will.
I actually put To Paradise down last night and I don’t think I’ll pick it up again. And then I read the plot breakdown of A Little Life and decided that’s not for me either. Oh well. Plenty of other great books written by women to get stuck into.
A Little Life, was life changing when I read it. I felt anything and everything. I still think of that book and the characters. Jude, now lives in my heart. I even two years after finishing the book.
Your novel These Impossible Things also lives with me. Such a beautifully written book about being a woman and your female friendships. Such a beautiful book about womanhood and female friendships. I also, recommended it to all my girlfriends after reading it.

Virginia Woolf is eternally great, what a wonderful choice.

I’m right there with you Laura, Ted Lasso is not something I even tried. I can’t bear it.
I haven’t heard of How To Say Babylon, but you’re very obviously a kindred spirit so I’m adding it to my reading list immediately. ❤️
My personal rule is no white, cis men. And I do at least 3 books by women or enby people to every book by a cis man!
That's such a great rule and wonderful balancing equation. :)

What a beautifully gorgeous message. Thank you so much for reading my book in the first place, I'm so glad you loved it.
Definitely don't start with To Paradise. A Little Life is the one you go with. Even I haven't picked up To Paradise yet and I'm a super fan.

100%. If that’s how you feel, AVOID at all costs. This life is too precious to waste.

Wow, thank you so much. I really hoped it would become a book people want to give to their girlfriends, so I'm so glad and grateful that you have. xx
