My dearest sister, my fellow friends,

The heart of inequality comes down, as it always does, to money. Who has it, who controls it, and who gets to make it. If you want to simplify the patriarchy it’s really easy to do; men have money, therefore they have power. If women around the world had the same access to funds that men do, there would naturally be less inequality. The patriarchy would be less powerful. However, they don’t, and it is one of the ways men retain their grip on control, and often women’s necks. There is a reason men didn’t let women have credit cards until 1975.

When you read about the history of women and money through the decades, most articles and books will tell you we’ve come a long way. If you think back to a Victorian woman who couldn’t vote, own property, open a bank account, or earn equal pay, then yes, we’ve come a long way. If you think back to ancient Egypt however, where women could own property and held equal financial rights with men, then we’ve actually regressed.
